Since 2006 in the rosé cellar

Since 2006, the cellar has carried a Bordeaux-trained eye into Provence rosé. At Château d'Esclans in Courthézon, winemaker Patrick Léon works as consultant to a house built around Grenache, Rolle, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Merlot and Tibouren in the Côtes de Provence. His formation began at Bordeaux University, then moved through the technical grammar of wine: oenology laboratory co-founder at the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture from 1967, technical director work from 1972, and group leadership at Mouton Rothschild Group. That history matters here because Château d'Esclans asks rosé to carry more structure than the easy poolside shorthand usually allows.

Paul Chevalier, winemaker at Château d'Esclans, brings a different discipline to the same room. He trained at the University of Reims in Champagne, a region where acidity, pressure, and public clarity all have consequences. At this château he has held Vice President and Global Marketing Director responsibilities, carrying Whispering Angel, The Palm Rosé, The Beach by Whispering Angel, and Garrus into wider markets without separating the bottle from the cellar language behind it.

Old Grenache pushed toward weight

The house is known for full-bodied, oak-aged Provence rosé, especially Whispering Angel and Garrus, drawn from old Grenache vines. The scale is not shy: Château d'Esclans produces 1.5 million bottles annually from a setting of 260 hectares of vineyards on an elevated plateau in the Provence hinterland. Those numbers would overwhelm a smaller idea of craft if the method were only volume. Here, the discipline sits in the decision to make still rosé with the seriousness of a cellar program, not as a seasonal afterthought.

By 2023, the stated vineyard approach centered on high-quality wines made in harmony with the environment, with no use of pesticides or herbicides, Good Agricultural Practices, and Clean Production protocols. That language is operational rather than decorative. It ties the vineyard pass to the finished wine: when the crop enters the cellar, the house wants the raw material to have already carried part of the method.

The château above the vines

The room around the work is quiet. Château d'Esclans occupies a historic Tuscan-style château at La Motte, near Courthézon, with verdant gardens and vineyard views from the plateau. The tasting room and cellar sit within that cultivated calm, the kind of estate setting that can soften the edge of a large program if the wine does not keep its line. Here, the line comes back to color, texture, and the handling of Grenache.

Whispering Angel carries the broadest public face of Château d'Esclans, the bottle that makes the estate's public argument most widely and plainly; Garrus, by contrast, keeps the oak-aged old-vine argument closer to the bench, where that quieter case can be considered with more focus and less public noise.
