Château La Lagune

First vintage in a classified cellar

The first vintage came in 2004 for Caroline Frey, former viticulturist and winemaker at Château La Lagune in Ludon. She arrived from the University of Oenology in Bordeaux, where she graduated top of her class, and took her place inside a Haut-Médoc estate whose scale asks for both field judgment and cellar discipline. The property works from an 18th-century Chartreuse-style château set within 150 hectares of parkland and forest, with 75-90 hectares of gravelly-sandy vineyard terroir. Frey’s role here sits at the join between the vineyard and the cellar: the decision about fruit, the timing of the pass through the rows, the tone of a still red wine before it becomes a blend. Her wider work has been tied to organic and biodynamic farming, with certification achieved in 2016 at Paul Jaboulet Aîné after her family acquired that Rhône house in 2006. At La Lagune, the stated philosophy is biodynamic, and the house’s rhythm follows the long way rather than a quick correction in the cellar.

Gravel, three grapes, and annual scale

The program at Château La Lagune is built around Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, grown for Haut-Médoc AOC still red wine. The house gives its production scale as 450,000 bottles annually, with approximately 18,000-20,000 cases of grand vin per vintage. Those figures matter because they describe a cellar where repetition is not small, yet the method still depends on a maker reading fruit before machinery takes over. The ultra-modern winery, designed by Patrick-Baggio and completed in 2003, gives the estate a contemporary working body beside the classical château. It is not a decorative contrast. It is where sorting, movement, fermentation decisions, and blending have to keep pace with the vineyard without losing the signature of the site: gravelly-sandy ground, Médoc structure, and the patience required of red wine made to carry time.

The cellar beside the Chartreuse

The room around the work is quiet rather than theatrical. Outside, the Chartreuse profile holds its 18th-century poise among parkland and forest; inside, the winery changes the register, all clean lines and cellar purpose. The tasting room and vineyard tour belong to the public face of the estate, but the more telling texture is the proximity between French classical architecture and a cellar planned for present-tense work. La Lagune’s atmosphere is refined, with a vaulted kitchen tied to French art de vivre, conviviality, and the slower pace of a house that treats hospitality as part of the estate rather than a separate performance.

A house held between field and cellar

Frey created Domaine de La Chapelle in 2023 and has also worked from her Swiss winery in Fully, but La Lagune remains defined by the discipline she brought to vineyard-first thinking at this address.
