A barrel selection still begins with a narrowing of site. Harry Peterson-Nedry, winemaker at Chehalem Winery in Newberg, keeps Chehalem Reserve tied closely to Ridgecrest, the vineyard that became the first in what would become the Ribbon Ridge AVA. His work here carries the double weight of founder and winemaker: Ridgecrest Vineyards and Chehalem began in 1980, and the same working landscape continues to organize the cellar’s language. The role is not a recent appointment placed over an inherited program. It is a long-held position, built from land, vineyard, barrel, and the finished wines that return to those names.

That continuity matters because the place does not need a complicated mythology. Peterson-Nedry’s own formulation stays close to the bench. “Chehalem Reserve is a barrel selection, almost exclusively from Ridgecrest.” The sentence gives the method its frame without widening it beyond the work at hand. Selection, in this case, is not an abstract claim to quality. It is a decision made among barrels, with Ridgecrest as the anchor and vintage as the condition.

Pinot Noir shaped for balance

Pinot Noir sits at the center of Chehalem’s identity, with Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay carrying the white-wine side of the cellar. The stated aims are balance, elegance, and texture rather than size. That distinction is not decorative. In the Willamette Valley AVA, where site and season can pull a wine toward tension, fruit, lift, or breadth, the discipline is in keeping shape without forcing weight.

Peterson-Nedry has described the Chehalem Reserve intention plainly: “It's focused on an elegant, feminine style as much as the vintage will allow.” The second half of the sentence is doing the serious work. The vintage is not treated as an obstacle to be corrected, nor as a slogan to be repeated. It sets the allowance. The cellar responds with selection, proportion, and restraint. High beams and a quieter pour

The tasting room is in historic downtown Newberg, bright and spare enough that the room does not crowd the wines. High ceilings and exposed wooden beams give the house its vertical line; simple decor keeps the counter from turning theatrical. Conversation can stay at its natural level. Outside, the patio softens the tasting room’s edges, letting the work move from cellar language into glass without changing its register.

For a winery built around sustainable practice and a small scale, the room suits the method. Nothing in it asks the visitor to confuse polish with volume. The wines arrive as still reds, still whites, and rosé from a cellar shaped around Pinot Noir and white wines, and the best reading of the place remains Ridgecrest itself.
