Clonakilla
- 01CityMurrumbateman, Australia
Approach Clonakilla through Murrumbateman and the visit shifts from cellar-door tourism to a precise Canberra District story: cool-climate Australian wine shaped by family tenure, small regional identity, and Shiraz treated as more than a warm-climate power grape. The grounded setting includes a fire for cold days, a tasting bar, outdoor patio, and vineyard views that keep the land in frame, not theatre.
Shiraz-Viognier as a Canberra District argument
Clonakilla’s reputation is tied to how this part of New South Wales found its voice. John Kirk established the family business in 1971 after buying a 44-acre farm near Murrumbateman, then in 1976 produced the Canberra District’s first commercial vintage: a Riesling Sauvignon Blanc and a Cabernet Shiraz. That places the estate near the start of the region’s modern wine identity, before Murrumbateman became a serious-drinker stop beyond the Australian coastal capitals.
The Côte-Rôtie connection shaped the next chapter. In 1992, Viognier fruit entered the picture, with the key decision to ferment it with Shiraz rather than bottle it as a separate white wine. In Australian terms, Clonakilla joined a smaller, cooler-climate conversation about perfume, structure, and site expression over sheer volume. The craft is concrete: pure Shiraz from the north-east-facing T&L vineyard goes into a single fermenter; whole berries ferment warm with native yeasts; maceration can run up to a month; maturation follows for around eighteen months in French oak, one third new.
A cellar-door visit built around place, not spectacle
The room’s appeal lies in proportion. Fireside seating, bar conversation, patio, and vineyard outlook give the tasting a rural cadence without rustic performance. Members also receive tasting and purchase opportunities across back vintages, useful for drinkers interested in how this district’s wines age, not only how they present on release.
