La Romanée back in family hands

The decision was to bring La Romanée back to the family cellar in 2002 at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair in Vosne-Romanée. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, proprietor and winemaker, works from that return: a family holding restored to hands-on vinification after generations in which the Liger-Belairs were landlords rather than makers. Born in 1970, he is the seventh Count Liger-Belair. He founded the domaine in 2000 with 3.2 hectares of Village and 1er Cru wines, then took over vinification of the monopole Grand Cru La Romanée from Régis Forey in 2002. The contracts with Bouchard Père & Fils were phased out by 2005. Behind that sequence sits the earlier rupture of the 1933 auction, when his grandfather Michel and great-uncle Just rescued parcels of La Romanée, Aux Reignots, and Les Chaumes. His training is unusually broad for a Burgundian proprietor at the bench: engineering, business, and oenology in Dijon. The cellar here is not a revival staged for romance. It is a family estate rebuilt through parcels, contracts, and the daily discipline of vinification.

A small domaine held to biodynamics

The method at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair begins in a small estate frame and stays close to the vineyard. The domaine works biodynamically, with Pinot Noir as the principal language of its still red wines and Chardonnay also present in the holdings. Its ground sits within Vosne-Romanée AOC, in the Côte de Nuits, where limestone and marl carry the tension expected of the village. Over more than two decades, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair expanded the domaine to 10.5 hectares across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Flagey-Échezeaux. The additions were specific rather than merely larger: Échezeaux, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots in 2006, and the monopole Clos des Grandes Vignes in 2012. In a place this small, the map is part of the method.

The quiet work of Vosne-Romanée

The tasting room belongs to the same register as the cellar: quiet, private, intimate, and built around attention rather than display. The estate atmosphere is refined without calling attention to itself, which suits a domaine whose most consequential work happens before the glass reaches the table. Outside, the village gives little away at first glance. Inside, the measure is parcel by parcel, a line of holdings that moves from Vosne-Romanée to Nuits-Saint-Georges and Flagey-Échezeaux, then back to the smallest Grand Cru, La Romanée. The room does not need theatre. The names do enough work.

What the inheritance asks

The importance of this place rests on custody as much as on production. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair did not simply inherit a label; he rebuilt a working domaine from historic family holdings, brought vinification home, and made the family name accountable at the bench. That accountability is the thread to follow in the glass, especially when a private tasting returns to La Romanée.
