The vineyard work stays close to the hand. Christian Ehrlich, winemaker at DREI ZEILEN WEIN in Rodelsee, has held the Inhaber role at Weinmanufaktur 3 Zeilen since 2007, working a small Franken estate whose scale keeps decisions bench-side rather than abstract. The place is also known as Weinmanufaktur 3 Zeilen, a name that suits its narrowness of focus: a few lines of vines, a direct cellar, a maker who does not soften his convictions for easy category. Ehrlich’s own phrasing is useful here. “I do not need the other soils in Franconia at all.” The sentence is blunt, but it gives the work its frame. This is not a survey of the region. It is a commitment to the slopes of the Schwanberg near Rödelsee, to organic farming, and to wines made for drinkers who already understand that restraint can carry weight.

Four hectares, eighteen thousand bottles

The estate is Bioland-certified and works about 4 hectares, producing roughly 18,000 bottles per year. Those figures explain much of the discipline. At this size, the vineyard and cellar remain within reach of the same person; pruning, picking decisions, fermentations, élevage and release do not disappear into departments. The stated philosophy is organic, and the portfolio sits within Franken’s familiar but demanding register: Silvaner, Riesling, Scheurebe, Pinot Noir and Müller-Thurgau, with still white, still red, rosé and pet nat all part of the field of work. The house language, “BIO.ANDERS.EHRLICH!”, reads less like a slogan when set against the method. Organic here is not decorative. It is the governing condition under which the fruit is grown, the cellar receives it, and the bottle leaves the estate.

A cellar kept personal

The estate has the feel of a working address rather than a visitor machine. Tastings happen close to the source: the vineyard, the cellar, the tasting room, the direct conversation with Ehrlich. The atmosphere is quiet and personal, with the Schwanberg giving the place its slope and Rödelsee its village scale. That intimacy matters in a winery this small. A guest does not encounter a polished theatre of wine production; they encounter the practical sequence of a Bioland estate, the bottles lined up by hand, the varietals spoken about as living material rather than merchandise. The room stays relaxed, but the program is not casual.

Made for the advanced drinker

DREI ZEILEN WEIN describes its audience as advanced wine lovers, and the phrase fits the wines’ stated direction: terroir-marked, structured, and built with potential rather than instant ease as the only goal. Ehrlich resists the costume of organic piety as much as the gloss of mass-market wine. “I do not walk through the vineyard wearing a jute poncho and cork sandals.” The line lands because the work behind it is practical.
