    Agave discipline at the bar

A brined martini arrives with cornichon-stuffed olives, and Equal Measure in Fenway, Boston works from that same appetite for precision. The bar opened in November 2023 alongside the relaunch of Eastern Standard, its sister brasserie down the hall, and ES Hospitality bar director Jackson Cannon built it as a brand new concept rather than a continuation. Bar principal Eliza Hoar came to it after finding the room on a trip and relocating to join, and between them the programme is set by seasonality, sustainability, and a back bar of rare, hand-selected spirits.

That intent meets a room built for contemporary cocktails rather than performance. The work asks for a clean read on the guest and the glass: when to explain, when to leave the drink alone, when the bar should move faster without feeling hurried. Cannon spent the pandemic closures of Eastern Standard, The Hawthorne and Island Creek Oyster Bar away from the counters he had helped define, so the Fenway relaunch reads as revival rather than repetition. Hoar has framed the menu as something that grows in increments instead of full overhauls, which is why the odder ingredients arrive one at a time.

    Clarified, carbonated, infused

The program at Equal Measure nods to classic architecture, then pulls it through kitchen habits. Clarified milk punches, live carbonation, infused spirits, and smoke all appear on the menu, but the bar keeps the drinks legible. Toki Highball puts Suntory Toki whisky with green apple live carbonation. Tomatillo DTO brings Paranubes rum, fino sherry, tomatillo water, and calamansi into a bright, savory register. Shroom With a View uses brown butter shiitake bourbon with Amaro Montenegro, honey, lemon, and egg white, a build that borrows from the stove without turning the glass into a dish.

The same discipline holds in the reworked classics. Dirty Love is a brined Fords gin martini with pickle brine, dry vermouth, and cornichon-stuffed olives. On the Avenue joins Ferrand 1840 cognac, rye, vermouth, Campari, and Cynar. Spill The Tea sets black tea-infused El Dorado 12yr rum with Earl Grey condensed cream and shortbread. The back bar gives agave drinkers room to move, with rare, hand-selected spirits supporting the bar’s larger appetite for depth rather than breadth alone.

    Moody light, measured service

The room keeps the volume at conversation level. Moody light settles over sleek, retro-modern lines and velvet seating, giving the bar a close, polished feel without pushing it into formality. The counter is the useful vantage point: glassware moving, carbonation checked, citrus and brine and smoke crossing the station in short intervals. Equal Measure belongs to ES Hospitality, but the bar does not lean on scale. It feels small by design, with the guest close enough to read the method and far enough back for the drink to arrive composed.

The room sits on Beacon Street a short walk from Fenway Park, which gives it a pre-show and post-show tempo without turning it into a sports bar. The wine program sits beside the cocktails with a curated hand, and the beer list stays local where it can, from Notch Salem Lager to Allagash White. Still, the center of the room remains the cocktail pass. Dirty Love puts the whole place in the brine, the gin, and the cornichon-stuffed olive.
