Fool's Errand is a subterranean wine bar on Divisadero Street in San Francisco's North Panhandle, founded in 2018 by John Dampeer and read from the start as a neighborhood room rather than a destination. The program favors the glass before the spectacle, and by 2019 the bar had become an industry favorite, drawing wine reps, sommeliers editing their own lists, and visiting producers.

That matters in a small bar. A room like this exposes every loose edge: the pacing of the counter, the timing of a cured meat plate, the way a staff member can move a guest from a familiar California pour toward Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Portugal, Greece, or Spain without turning the exchange into a lecture. The discipline sits there rather than in a signature. The food does not try to overtake the list. It gives the glass something steady to lean on.

A single page with a long cellar mind

The wine program at Fool's Errand works from concentration rather than size. The list is a single page, organized by region, with France present in force and a clear pull toward Austrian and German Riesling. Producers named around the program include Lauer, Knoll, Diel, Von Winning, and Clemens Busch; the list also makes room for clusters from Italy's Skerk and Spain's Envinate. By the glass, the bar has been noted for more than a dozen options, with three Riesling pours available at any time.

The method is curation, not abundance. Natural and biodynamic bottles appear, but the bar is not written as a doctrinaire natural-wine room. It holds beer in the program too, including local craft selections and ciders, which keeps the back bar from becoming a narrow argument. Tastings have brought in wines such as Envinate's Tenerife verticals, the kind of allocation that draws wine people because it is specific, not because it announces itself loudly.

Low ceilings, close voices

The room works at close range. Low ceilings give Fool's Errand its cabin-like pressure; the bar feels snug without becoming sealed off. Conversation carries at the level of people leaning toward each other, not shouting across a room.
