Chardonnay at the center of the cellar

Chardonnay gives Andrew Holve, Winemaker and Director of Winery Operations at Hudson Napa Valley in Napa, his first point of reference in the cellar. Since 2024, he has held a post that asks him to make wine and keep the larger operation moving, a station where the daily work of fruit, vessels, timing, and finished wine meets the less visible discipline of a working winery. Before Hudson, Holve served as head of winemaking at Newton Vineyard, a role built around cellar judgment and the steady conversion of harvest into bottle. At Hudson, that background narrows rather than disperses. Chardonnay remains the named specialty, and the grape sets the clearest line through his work here: attention to texture, restraint in the cellar, and enough operational range to protect the method from the pressure of motion. The house also lists Clayton Kirchhoff as a winemaker, though Holve is the maker whose current role joins winemaking with winery operations.

A ranch scaled for small production

The work sits on a historic 2,000-acre ranch in Los Carneros, with 200 acres planted to vineyard across rolling hills, oak woodland, gardens, and other farm elements. Hudson Napa Valley works at small scale, with production given as 3,000 cases per year, and the farming philosophy is sustainable. Chardonnay is the anchor, but the cellar also carries Syrah, Merlot, Grenache, Aleatico, Pinot Grigio, and still red and white wines from the Los Carneros AVA. The ranch has long been known for premium Chardonnay grapes sold to producers including Aubert and Kistler; now the same ground also feeds an estate program under Holve’s hand. The house does not publish its fermentation regime or barrel protocol, so the most honest measure here is the frame around the craft: small production, estate ranch scale, sustainable farming, and a winemaker whose named discipline is Chardonnay.

The vineyard, the bay, the quiet room

The tasting rooms sit inside a landscape that does not need much staging, because the setting already carries the experience. Gardens press close to the paths, the vineyards open outward, and the bay holds the far edge of the view. The mood is quiet, intimate, and set apart, closer to a ranch room than a performance of Napa polish, with no need to overstate itself. From the tasting room, the place reads in layers: planted rows, rolling Carneros hills, oak woodland, and the farm elements that keep the property from feeling reduced to vines alone. That matters to the cellar because the wine is not being framed in abstraction or pulled away from its source. Holve’s Chardonnay leaves the bench and returns to a room where the land is still visible, at every step, with the 200 acres of vineyard in sight.
