Grenache held as the benchmark

Grenache sets the first decision, before blend or label. Mikael Sigouin, Winemaker at Kaena Wine Co. in Santa Ynez, works from that grape as a center of gravity, not as a sidebar to a broader Rhône program. The line is personal and practical. He treats Grenache for aromatic lift, structure, and a point of view that can carry into blends without losing its own shape.

Sigouin came to this station by accumulation. He was assistant winemaker at Fess Parker Winery until 2006, then head winemaker at Beckmen Vineyards from 2006 to 2014. Since 2014, he has held the combined role of winemaker and owner at Kaena Wine Company, joining the cellar decisions to the obligations of the person whose name sits behind the operation. The Kaena thread began in 2001, and the current work in Santa Ynez keeps that earlier commitment close to the bench: cellar practice first, ownership in the same daily frame, Grenache as the recurring test.

A Rhône cellar with Hawaiian inflection

The program is small production and sustainable in philosophy, with Grenache at its most visible edge. Kaena Wine Co. works across Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Sauvignon Blanc, with still red, still white, and rosé wines inside the frame. The house is known locally for a broad Grenache portfolio in the Santa Ynez Valley, and Sigouin’s own signature line includes Grenache, 2004 Grenache Santa Ynez Valley Tierra Alta Vineyard, 2004 Grenache Santa Ynez Valley Larner Vineyard, 2004 Syrah Santa Ynez Valley, and 2004 Hapa Santa Ynez Valley.

The craft facts available here point less to machinery than to discipline. Sigouin’s earlier cellar years gave him repetition before ownership, and the current role asks him to hold style, business, and cellar consequence together. His own language for the grape is direct: Grenache is intensely aromatic, feminine, bold, and full of surprise. On the bench, that reads as a demand for restraint. A wine can be lifted without becoming thin; it can carry structure without being forced into heaviness. That is the narrow pass Kaena asks of the grape.

Garden, tasting room, quiet cellar rhythm

The ranch setting in Solvang gives the work a low, outdoor register: gardens, scenic views, and a tasting room that keeps its Hawaiian inflection close to hospitality rather than spectacle. The room is intimate, with indoor tasting and outdoor tasting both part of the experience, and the quiet helps the wine stay in front of the visitor. Rustic and cozy are not design claims here so much as working conditions. The counter, the garden seating, the cellar thread, and the Rhône bottles belong to the same pace.

Los Olivos is the address, but the wine language points through Santa Ynez Valley. Grenache Blanc and Mourvèdre sit beside the reds, and the rosé keeps the program from narrowing into one register. End the visit on the material rather than the mood: Kaena’s argument is still being made through Grenache.
