Mountain Cabernet under one hand

Select rows and blocks set the scale before Chris Carpenter, winemaker at Lokoya Winery in Spring Mountain District, St. Helena, begins the cellar work. He has held the Lokoya post since 2000, long enough for the job to read less like a tenure than a discipline repeated vintage after vintage. His training runs through University of Illinois, a University of Illinois MBA and UC Davis, then into Assistant Winemaker roles at Lokoya Winery and Cardinale from 1998–2001. That sequence matters here because Lokoya asks for judgment across vineyards rather than the habits of a single estate block. The house was established in 1995 with a narrow purpose: mountain Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley, not broad appellation blending for ease. Carpenter’s own description of the work is direct: “I don’t pull any punches on how Lokoya is made and how the fruit is grown. It gets all the resources and all the attention that it deserves.” He also names the dual station plainly, saying, “And that’s how, as a winemaker and vineyard overseer, we operate for Lokoya.” At this address, the hand in the cellar and the eye in the vineyard belong to the same brief.

Four mountain bottlings, no softening

The program is built around four 100% Cabernet Sauvignons from Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain and Diamond Mountain. Each bottling carries its own mountain syntax, but the method keeps the grammar consistent: native-yeast fermentation, small lots, and wines bottled unfined and unfiltered. Lokoya’s home property spans 77 acres, with approximately 25 planted to vines, including Bordeaux red varieties and several acres of Riesling. The commercial voice, though, stays tightly fixed on Cabernet Sauvignon. The work begins with parcel-level selection, sometimes drawn from a few rows in specific vineyard blocks, then moves through a cellar approach intended to preserve structure rather than polish it away. The house does not give a public cellar ledger for barrel regimen or aging timelines, so the more useful facts are the ones it does state: mountain fruit, native yeast, no fining, no filtration, and a winemaker whose work here has been measured in continuity since 2000.

The long table and the view

The cellar’s hospitality side sits inside a Howard Backen–designed estate above St. Helena, where the tasting room turns the mountain setting into part of the work. A long table seating 30 anchors the room. Around it are a library, a sofa lounge, terraces and lookout points that open toward vineyards and the valley below. The tone is quiet, not hushed for effect, but held at the pace of seated tasting, food pairing and the sort of Cabernet that asks for time in the glass. Sunset belongs to the architecture here as much as to the vineyard. The room lets Carpenter’s mountain wines arrive with context: Spring Mountain underfoot, Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain and Diamond Mountain in the flight, and Lokoya Cabernet Sauvignon at the center of the table.
