Albuquerque’s career began with Madeira Wine Company in Funchal, where he entered the discipline of the island’s wines before his present post. The house’s public story reaches back to 1913, when several Madeira wine companies joined forces during a weak export market, keeping separate brand identities under one structure. That lineage still matters at the bench. Blandy’s Madeira carries the family thread back to 1811; Cossart Gordon is presented as dating to 1745; Miles Madeira dates to 1814; Atlantis, introduced in 1992, marks the company’s move into still table wine under Albuquerque’s hand.

A large cellar for old methods

The Canical winery was completed in 2016, with 22,000 hl of storage and extensive estufagem capacity. Those figures tell the truth of the place better than any tasting-room language: Madeira Wine Company is the island’s largest producer and exporter of Madeira wine, and this is the working plant that carries that load. The program spans Malvasia, Verdelho, Sercial, Bual and Terrantez, with fortified Madeira at its center and still white, still red and dessert wines around it. The house also presents sustainable production as part of its philosophy, though the cellar’s deeper technical details remain closely held. What can be seen in the public identity is a method of preservation by brand: Blandy’s for premium Madeira, Cossart Gordon for rare micro-production, Miles for a more modern drinking register, and Atlantis for Madeira’s first still table wine. Albuquerque’s signature names, Atlantis and 50 years Terrantez, sit at the two ends of that range, one turned toward the Atlantic table, the other toward time in cask.

The industrial edge of Madeira

The room in Canical is not arranged as a romantic lodge. It is a modern industrial winery, lively with tanks, cooperage, production lines and barrel storage, built for the practical movements that keep a large Madeira house steady. The eastern point of the island gives the place a different register from Funchal: less museum, more station; less polished ritual, more method. Wine moves through the facility under watch, with the premium aging areas held apart from the broader production flow. The company’s visitor-facing heritage remains tied to Blandy’s Wine Lodge, where more than 650 barrels and vats form part of the family narrative, but Canical carries the weight behind the labels. This is not spectacle. It is whether Sercial, Bual, Malvasia, Verdelho and Terrantez leave the cellar with their identities intact.
