Maximin Grünhaus – Weingut der Familie von Schubert

Return to a family hillside

Riesling sets the first decision for Maximin von Schubert, Winemaker at Maximin Grünhaus in Mertesdorf, where the family estate works the Ruwer from a former monastery complex. International winery experience came before his 2015 arrival at the property, so the return was not a retreat into inheritance. It brought outside cellar time back to a house whose modern family ownership dates to 1882.

Continuity is not decorative here. The estate traces its deeper history to a deed of donation attributed to Frankish king Dagobert I in 633, when the Trier Benedictine monastery of St. Maximin already held buildings, vineyards and land in Mertesdorf. Emperor Otto I confirmed that ownership in 966, and Benedictine control lasted until secularisation in 1802. Since 1981, the winery has been run by the family line represented by von Schubert. That is the structure behind the bench: one generation receives the hillside, works it, and hands forward the names that still organize the cellar.

Three monopoles on the Grüneberg

The estate farms 34 hectares in the Mosel, within the Ruwer appellation, on the Grüneberg near Trier. Its working identity sits in three contiguous monopole sites, Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg, each carrying its own place-name into bottle. Those bottlings make the method legible without needing spectacle. Classification, site and residual-sugar language sit on the label; the vineyard does the rest. The room is quiet in the way working cellars often are, with the former monastery complex behind it and steep vineyard ground rising around the estate. The tasting room is a historic cellar house with views toward the monopole sites and Schloss Grünhaus, and the glass comes from the place that formed it. Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg are not abstract parcels on a card. They are visible names on the hillside.

That closeness gives the house its tempo. The cellar, the vineyard and the tasting room answer to the same slope, and the wines keep returning to named ground rather than a general Mosel idea. If the next movement here is measured bottle by bottle, the steady point remains the Grüneberg, and the names Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg carry the work forward.
