The program is built on selective sourcing rather than a single estate claim. Napa Cellars works from its own vineyards and long-term grower partners, choosing fruit across Napa Valley AVAs to keep the wines varietally correct and steady from vintage to vintage. That breadth matters at the bench: Cabernet Sauvignon does not ask the same thing as Sauvignon Blanc, and Carneros Pinot Noir brings a different kind of discipline from Merlot or Zinfandel. Shirley’s task is to preserve those differences without turning the cellar into a place of signatures. The wines are meant to carry place in a form that remains approachable, with balance held as a craft decision rather than a tasting-room adjective.

The dome, the vines, the mountain line

The tasting room sits inside a geodesic dome, a shape commissioned by founder Charlie Woods and still part of the way the property announces itself from Highway 29. Around it, Oakville vineyards, garden picnic tables and the coastal mountain line give the room its frame. The atmosphere is relaxed and rustic rather than hushed; conversation sits easily with the glass, and the staff work in the register of people who spend their days close to the wines. For a winery of medium scale, the place keeps a small-feeling pace. The counter, the outdoor tables and the view back to the vines all return attention to the same question Shirley carries in the cellar: how much should the hand do, and when should it stop?

Napa Cellars matters here because its craft is not built around novelty. The house has kept its Napa Valley claim since 1976, using a broad portfolio to make the region legible through familiar grapes rather than a narrow exercise in rarity. Shirley’s next work is the same patient work: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and the rest of the range passing through a cellar where restraint is the discipline, under the roof of the geodesic dome.
