Nomad Bar

<p>In 2018, The World's 50 Best Bars ranked NoMad Bar fourth globally and first in North America — a placement that reflected what the bar had built over several years near Madison Square Park: a serious cocktail program housed in a space that read more speakeasy than hotel lounge, with food substantial enough to anchor a full evening rather than merely accompany drinks.</p> <p>The food program drew directly from the DNA of Eleven Madison Park, with Daniel Humm and Will Guidara overseeing the broader NoMad hotel dining operation. Chef James Kent handled the bar's kitchen, producing a menu of upscale American bar fare that leaned into comfort without sacrificing craft. The dry-aged beef burger, a chicken burger finished with foie gras and black truffle mayo, and a chicken pot pie built along similar lines gave the menu a pub-inflected logic executed at a considerably higher register than the format typically demands.</p> <p>The bar itself occupied a different register from the adjacent NoMad restaurant. Where the restaurant operated with the formality expected of a destination dining room, the bar was designed for longer, looser evenings — a high-ceilinged, atmospherically lit room that encouraged the kind of unhurried drinking and eating that formal tasting menus structurally prevent. Cocktails were treated with the same seriousness as the food, and the combination made NoMad Bar one of the more coherent bar-restaurant hybrids Manhattan produced in that decade.</p> <p>The NoMad Hotel closed permanently in March 2021, taking the bar and restaurant with it. What the bar demonstrated during its run — that a hotel bar could earn global recognition on the strength of its beverage program while also fielding a food menu worth ordering in full — remains a useful benchmark for understanding what the category can achieve when kitchen and bar work from the same set of standards.</p>
