Technical direction kept close to the cellar

Agricultural Sciences still shows in the way Alessio Planeta, Winemaker at Planeta in Menfi, holds the technical line: crop first, cellar second, decision by decision. Since 1991, he has carried the joined responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer and Technical Director at the family winery, keeping management and winemaking in the same set of hands rather than letting the program split into office and bench. That continuity gives the place its discipline. The estate is large in scale, but the work attached to his name remains specific: Cometa, La Segreta Bianco, Eruzione 1614 Carricante, and Nocera. Each bottling sits inside a wider Menfi practice built on still white and still red wines, with Chardonnay, Nero d’Avola, Syrah, Merlot, Grecanico, and Fiano among the varieties associated with the house. The public role is broad. The craft role is narrower, and more telling: to keep the technical direction of Planeta tied to the day-to-day realities of production.

A Menfi program built across varieties

The cellar works within Menfi DOC, drawing its character from a family estate whose history reaches back to 1694 and whose vineyards and olive groves sit around Lake Arancio and the coastal hills. The setting includes 250+ hectare vineyards, a scale that asks for systems as much as instinct. Planeta’s stated philosophy is sustainable, and the range moves across white and red work rather than resting on a single grape. Chardonnay and Fiano give the white program one set of questions; Nero d’Avola, Syrah, and Merlot give the red program another. Alessio Planeta’s technical background matters here because variety alone does not make a house. Repetition does. Picking decisions, fermentations, blends, and élevage have to answer to the same hand over time. The house has received recognition attached to Alessio Planeta as Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award Winemaker of the Year in 2023, and the continuity of the method since 1991.

The cellar, the vineyard, the quiet room

The place carries two registers at once: old baglio architecture and modern winemaking, stone presence and technical control. Around it, vineyards roll toward lake and sea views, with ancient olive groves giving the estate a slower visual rhythm than the scale might suggest. The tasting room belongs to that quiet. Private tastings take place in a peaceful setting, with the vineyard and the cellar never far from view. Nothing in the room needs to press. The estate’s elegance comes from proportion: rustic walls, open land, the discipline of a large program made legible through individual bottles. In a winery of this size, silence can be a useful craft condition. It lets the glass return attention to Menfi, to the hand making the decisions, and to Planeta’s Nocera.
