A narrow hand for Cabernet Franc

A 25-case Cabernet Franc asks for a narrow hand. At Shadybrook Estate Winery in Napa, winemaker Rudy Zuidema works from that kind of scale, keeping the cellar close enough for judgment to matter. His training began at University of California, Davis, then moved through Napa Valley cellar posts at St. Clement Vineyards, Cuvaison, Honig, Robert Craig Winery, and Ehlers Estate. Each role added another pressure point: fruit coming in, lots separating, blends tightening, the discipline of deciding what not to move. At Robert Craig Winery he served as Head Winemaker until 2003; from 2003 he served as winemaker at Ehlers Estate. He now carries several responsibilities at once, as founder and owner/operator of Zuidema Wine Co., co-founder of Flash Wine Technologies since 2012, and winemaker here in Coombsville. The throughline is Cabernet Franc, not as a flourish, but as a repeated problem of structure, aroma, tannin, and restraint. The 2021 Single-Barrel Cabernet Franc at Shadybrook was made in only 25 cases, a quantity that leaves little room for abstraction. The bench is close to the bottle.

Estate fruit in a private valley

The work sits within the Coombsville AVA, on a property described by its own materials as 83 acres of vineyards, gardens, horse stables, and a working cave of 16,000 sq ft. The farming is framed as sustainable, and the cellar program stays boutique rather than expansive. The varietal field is broad enough to give a winemaker range without turning the place into a catalogue: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Still red and still white wines form the focus, with Cabernet Franc carrying the clearest link to Zuidema’s own record. The named bottling gives the most exact measure of the method: 2021, single barrel, 25 cases. At that size, selection is not a marketing category. It is a cellar decision repeated in small increments, from the way a lot is held back to the moment a wine is judged ready to stand alone.

The cellar, the terrace, the horses

The place keeps two forms of attention in view: the cellar and the estate around it. Inside, the tasting room is cozy and naturally lit, a quiet room rather than a stage. Outside, a 4,000 sq ft garden terrace looks over vineyards, giving the work its own horizon without pulling it away from the rows. The horseback rides are not incidental decoration here; they belong to the estate’s equestrian ground, with stables set beside vines and gardens in the same private valley. That combination gives Shadybrook a different tempo from a tasting counter built only around pours. The wine still has to carry the weight. The last concrete measure remains the 2021 Single-Barrel Cabernet Franc.
