From the lab bench to the blend

At the lab bench, measurement comes before instinct; at Silverado Vineyards in Napa, Jonathan Emmerich is a winemaker who still carries that order into the cellar. He was a laboratory technician here in 2000, a station built on samples, patience, and the habit of checking a decision before it becomes a wine. His training at University of California, Davis in 1987 gave him the technical base, but the useful lineage at Silverado is also internal: the lab before the blend, the bench before the cellar floor, the slow conversion of measurement into judgment.

Today Emmerich works with a house identity tied closely to site and method. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot define much of his work, with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc also part of the estate range. The role asks him to stand between vineyard and bottle without making either disappear. His own line is plain enough to serve as a working standard: "Wine has to be delicious. It is meant to be a pleasure." At Silverado, that sentence does not soften the discipline. It gives the discipline a purpose.

Estate fruit across 360 acres

Silverado works from estate-grown fruit across 360 acres in multiple Napa sub-appellations, a scale large enough to require systems and close enough to keep the hand of the winemaker visible. The central sources named in Emmerich’s work are Silverado Vineyard in Stags Leap District and Mount George Vineyard in Coombsville. Those names matter because they set the boundaries of the craft: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot read differently when the fruit comes from sites with their own weight, exposure, and rhythm.

The house is also tied to the Disney-Silverado Heritage Clone of Cabernet Sauvignon, described by the winery as one of the first plantings in Stags Leap District. That is not a decorative fact. A clone is a decision carried through vines, harvests, fermentations, and blends; it becomes part of the cellar vocabulary long before it becomes a label. What can be said is more direct: Emmerich’s method begins with vineyard identity and ends with balance in the glass.

The terrace above the vines

The room at Silverado is quiet enough for the vineyard to remain present. Tastings unfold in a scenic, intimate setting, with outdoor experiences that look across vines, hillsides, and Mt. St. Helena. The atmosphere is elegant without stiffness, the kind of place where the glass does not need a louder room around it. For a winery built on still red wines, that restraint suits the work.

The tasting program centers on private tastings and wine and cheese pairings, with the vineyard in view rather than treated as scenery. The counter, the terrace, and the hillside belong to the same argument: site first, then cellar, then the finished wine. When the Disney-Silverado Heritage Clone is in the glass, the place has already named its subject.
