Smith III works as winemaker at Smith-Madrone Vineyards & Winery in St. Helena, where estate fruit comes off steep mountainside vineyards and the hand in the cellar stays measured. He has held that post since 1973, long enough for the work to read less like a project than a practiced discipline, repeated through seasons of slope, soil, weather, and waiting.

Smith’s route to the bench did not begin as a straight apprenticeship. He studied at University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco State University, then worked as Boy Scout camp staff at Emerald Bay on Catalina Island, a probation officer, a furniture mover, and a taxi cab driver in San Francisco. Those facts matter because this is a mountain estate, not a stage set. The work asks for practical judgment, endurance, and a tolerance for tasks that do not announce themselves. Smith has described entering wine through his brother and a hobby that got out of control. At Smith-Madrone, that line has settled into a working life.

Estate fruit, narrow range

The program here is small by design: less than 4000 cases annually from 38 acres, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot planted into the estate’s high-elevation ranch. The vineyards sit at 1300-2000 feet in the Spring Mountain District AVA, where forested slopes, historic rock walls, and the dry-farmed method keep the work tied to the ground rather than to a recipe.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Riesling form the core of the cellar, while Cook’s Flat Reserve sits as the premium Cabernet in the range. The estate was planted in 1972, and the wines continue to be shaped around still white and still red expressions rather than breadth for its own sake. Old-world and modern techniques both remain available to Smith, but neither becomes the point. The point is control: estate sourcing, restrained handling, and enough patience for hillside character to carry into bottle.

Rock walls, madrone shade, quiet cellar work

The place itself keeps the tempo low. Smith-Madrone sits on a mountain ranch above the valley floor, among historic olive trees, madrone forests, and vineyard views that open and close with the slope. The atmosphere is quiet, not polished into silence, with the cellar, vineyard, and tasting room all answering to the same estate scale.

That scale matters in the room. This is not a winery built around spectacle or volume; it is an intimate, family-run estate where the craft remains close to the fruit and the site. The forested edges are part of the experience, as are the rock walls and the height of Spring Mountain. The final measure is still in the glass, and here that measure has a name: Cook’s Flat Reserve.
