A Four-Table Dining Room in West Oakland

Sun Moon Studio occupies a discreet room on Union Street in West Oakland, but it is not a chef’s counter. The dining room has four tables: two two-tops and two four-tops. With the open kitchen and service area only a few steps away, the experience feels closer to dinner in someone’s home than a conventional fine-dining room.

Co-Chefs Alan Hsu and Sarah Cooper

Co-chefs and co-owners Alan Hsu and Sarah Cooper lead the restaurant together. Their farmer- and producer-driven tasting menu follows Northern California seasons while drawing on personal references that can include Taiwanese sausage, Shao Xing wine, soy milk tofu, nori, shiso, and miso. The Michelin Guide recognizes Sun Moon Studio with one star and highlights the chefs’ technically precise, product-focused cooking.

What to Expect

The fixed tasting menu is served at tables and typically lasts about two to two and a half hours. The small scale keeps service unusually personal: guests remain face to face with their own party while still feeling connected to the kitchen and every member of the team.

Reservations, Dietary Needs, and Private Dining

Reservations are released six weeks ahead at noon Pacific through OpenTable. Standard reservations are available for parties of up to six. Groups of seven to 14 require a full-restaurant buyout, and the Studio’s maximum capacity is 14 guests. Many, but not all, dietary restrictions can be accommodated when disclosed during booking. There is no waiting area, so plan to arrive close to the reservation time.
