At the still house, Keith Cruickshank keeps his judgement close to the work as Winemaker at The Cairn Distillery in Grantown-on-Spey. His route into that station has been built through Scotch production from the tools outward: distiller first, then Distillery Manager, with long time spent around stills, warehouse demands and the small decisions that keep spirit consistent. He joined Benromach Distillery as a distiller in 1998–2000, moved into Distillery Manager there from 2000, and in 2025 was appointed to lead the revival of the historic Coleburn site. He speaks first about the hand. In a distillery, that word is not decorative. It means the person at the station reads the process as it moves, not only as a set of instructions: the charge, the heat, the cut, the cask, the warehouse, the point at which repetition becomes judgement. The Cairn Distillery does not publish the particulars of Cruickshank’s program, including a mash bill, still regime or warehouse practice. What can be said is narrower and more useful. His work has been shaped by Scotch production in which the distiller stays near the process, and by leadership that treats consistency as a daily act rather than a claim.

The still house without theatre

The room to picture is not a stage. It is the still house, the warehouse, the line between clean decision and patient waiting.
