Since 2018, two judgments have led the cellar. Steffen und Sophie Christmann, winemakers at Weingut A. Christmann in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, share the family estate in Gimmeldingen with a method that starts from place and returns to it. Steffen has carried the seventh generation here since 1996; Sophie joined him in joint leadership in 2018. That sequence matters because the estate’s present tense is not a clean break from its inheritance. It is the same line, worked by different hands, with decisions measured against the site and the season.

The house sits in the Pfalz, on the vineyard hills of the Mittelhaardt, where classified VDP.Erste Lage and VDP.Große Lage sites set the frame for the work. The Christmanns’ operating logic is plain: place first, daily work, no abstraction from the ground underfoot. In a family estate, that can sound simple until the repetition begins. The same rows are read again, the same cellar choices tested again, the same name carried into another vintage. Time on the tools is part of the inheritance.

Idig Riesling and Spätburgunder from biodynamic ground

The program here is small in scale, with 19-21 ha, and biodynamic in philosophy. Riesling leads the white work, with Weissburgunder also in the cellar; Spätburgunder carries the red side, particularly in the estate’s top Palatinate sites. The standout marker is the VDP.Große Lage Riesling from the Idig vineyard, a bottle that ties the Christmann name to a specific slope rather than to a generalized house style.

The estate also makes Aus den Lagen, identified with Steffen’s signature within the family house. That name reads as a useful clue to the Christmann discipline: the wine is not presented as a cellar invention first, but as an expression gathered from sites. The cellar does not publish the detail of its fermentation or élevage choices in the material at hand, so the more responsible reading stays with what the estate makes clear. The work is biodynamic, site-led, and anchored in Riesling, Spätburgunder and Weissburgunder from the Pfalz.

The quiet between vineyard and glass

The tasting room belongs to the same register as the wine: quiet, close to the cellar, and scaled for attention rather than traffic. This is not a house built around spectacle. The setting does more of the speaking, with the vineyard hills above Gimmeldingen and the Mittelhaardt giving the room its orientation. A cave tasting here places the glass near the work, not as theatre, but as a continuation of the bench-side conversation between vineyard, cellar and season.

That intimacy suits the estate’s scale. The visitor meets a program shaped by a family line and by classified sites, not by a broad hospitality script. Riesling, Spätburgunder and Weissburgunder carry most of the vocabulary; the room stays quiet enough for those distinctions to matter. The close attention belongs on the Idig vineyard, where the Christmanns’ VDP.Große Lage Riesling keeps the estate’s place-first method in the glass.
