Decisions about fruit, timing, release and continuity do not pass through a separate layer before they reach the bench-side work of making wine.

Höpler’s own description is compact: “The magic of nature, science and alchemy!” He also calls the house style “non-invasive wine making,” language that suits a family estate carried forward by stewardship rather than reset. The lineage named here is direct, from Jost to Christof, with the estate’s identity held in the family name and in the wines that leave Breitenbrunn. The work has breadth, but its structure is plain: a winemaker-owner standing inside the same cellar whose label carries his surname.

Fifty hectares near Lake Neusiedl

Weingut Höpler works from 50 hectares on the northwest shore of Lake Neusiedl, within Leithaberg DAC. The estate’s vineyards sit in a region whose recorded viticultural history reaches back to Cistercian plantings in 1203, and the current program moves across still white, red and rosé wines rather than narrowing the house to a single expression. Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling sit beside Pinot Noir, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, Merlot and Zweigelt, giving Höpler a wide set of materials to read each season.

The named bottlings show that range without needing much explanation: Pinot Blanc 2025, Rosé Célestia 2025, Pinot Noir Ried Rosenberg 2021, St. Laurent Erwein 2022 and Pinot Blanc 2024. Sustainable farming, a non-invasive style and estate accountability form the working frame. The craft rests on restraint, with the cellar asked to hold shape around the fruit rather than impose one.

A light cellar on the northwest shore

The modern winery covers 2,500m², set among the vineyards rather than apart from them. Solar energy powers the facility, and the room is light and airy, a practical luxury for people spending their days with tanks, barrels, samples and glass. Quiet matters in a cellar. It lets small decisions remain small enough to catch: the look of a juice sample, the timing of a rack, the way a young red settles after handling.

From the tasting room, the place reads as scenic, but the work underneath is not decorative. Single-vineyard and estate tastings draw attention back to origin, variety and vintage, the same coordinates Höpler handles in production. The setting gives the wines their frame: Breitenbrunn, Lake Neusiedl, Leithaberg DAC, 50 hectares under one family name.

The reason to keep returning to this estate is the steadiness of the handoff. Since 2008, Christof Höpler has carried both the ownership and the winemaking, and the next release to read through that lens is already named in the cellar’s own language: Pinot Blanc 2025.
