Thirty parcels under organic cultivation

The estate works 17 hectares under organic cultivation, spread across 30 vineyard parcels in the Leithaberg region. That fragmentation matters. Slate and limestone do not behave as decoration in the description of the wines; they divide the work before fermentation begins, asking the cellar to keep difference intact rather than smooth it into a house style. The winery’s stated scale is small, and the method follows that size: concentrated, low-intervention wines, organic farming, dry-farmed sourcing, natural fermentation, and restrained sulfur use.

Blaufränkisch carries the strongest signature because it can hold both ripeness and edge when the site is handled with patience. Chardonnay, Neuburger, Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt, Traminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Welschriesling appear in the wider frame, along with still red, still white, rosé, and skin-contact wines. The house does not ask breadth to do the work of identity. It lets the vineyard parcels, the soils, and the fermentation program set the terms.

The cellar door stays quiet

The tasting room at Weingut Markus Altenburger keeps close to the cellar’s discipline. It is not a room built around performance; it suits a private tasting, a vineyard walk, and the slower conversation that follows when a wine is being read by parcel, soil, and grape. The setting is the village of Jois, not a detached stage for Leithaberg. The cellar door sits inside a family-owned winery where the work remains intimate in scale and quiet in tone.

In that quiet, the materials have room. A glass of Vom Kalk Blaufränkisch can point back to limestone without needing the point overexplained; Gritschenberg Blaufränkisch can carry the estate’s red line from another angle. The room, the cellar, and the vineyards stay in the same sentence. Altenburger’s next vintage will still have to answer to the same parcels, the same organic discipline, and the same pressure placed on Blaufränkisch in Jois.
