The estate itself carries a family ownership line of 230 years, so succession is not treated as a dramatic turn. It is a daily station.

Kühn’s own language keeps the scale close to the hands: “We are just a family winery with great employees.” That sentence fits the work at this address better than a larger claim would. His brief is dry Riesling from the best sites, handled with a clear read on fruit, cellar, and the people around him. The house works biodynamically, with Demeter certification since 2004, and the discipline shows most plainly in the refusal to decorate what the vineyard has already set in motion.

Dry Riesling from named ground

The program is built around Riesling, with Spätburgunder also part of the estate language, and its scale remains small at 22.9 acres. The vineyards sit in the Rheingau, on sandbanks, gravel terraces, and quartzite clay-loam soils, a set of materials that asks the cellar to preserve line rather than add weight. Kühn’s signature bottles name their origins directly: 2023 Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling GG, Riesling GG aus dem Berg Schlossberg, Jahrgang 2023, Sankt Nikolaus, Jacobus, and 2020 Oestricher Lenchen Trocken GG.

Those names matter because they make the method legible. The work is not a single house blend softened into sameness; it is a sequence of sites, vintages, and decisions, each held inside a dry frame. Biodynamic farming here is not presented as ornament. It belongs to the estate’s way of reading origin, elegance, and emotional depth through still white wine, with the cellar taking its place after the vineyard rather than above it.

Quiet work between cellar and vineyard

The estate’s mood is intimate and quiet, closer to a family working house than a polished stage. A cave tasting keeps the visitor near the cellar rather than separating the glass from the place that formed it. Outside, the Rheingau ground gives the wines their first architecture; inside, the cellar keeps pressure on timing, vessel, and the point at which intervention should stop. The room does not need volume.

Kühn has described the role with more tension than romance: “I learn, love and hate, am king and servant, find freedom and connection.” It is a useful sentence for this cellar because it leaves authority and service in the same hand. It is still the bottle, and here that means the dry line of 2023 Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling GG.
