Reading the vineyard before the cellar

Mark Wentworth reads the estate fruit as owner and winemaker at Wentworth Vineyard & Ranch in Philo, moving between vineyard decisions and cellar work rather than separating the two. Mark Wentworth has held the proprietor role since 2014, and the house is still built around that close circuit: land, season, ferment, bottle. Before wine, he worked as a pharmaceutical staffer, then learned production through the physical jobs that strip romance out of the trade. “I felt like if I could clean kegs and fill bottles and work on the brew team at small breweries, then I could get a handle on wine production.” The line matters because it starts with the low bench work. Cleaning, filling, joining the brew team; each task teaches sequence, sanitation, repetition, and consequence. At Wentworth Vineyard & Ranch, that way of learning remains visible in the role itself. Ownership asks him to look after the whole estate. Winemaking asks him to stay with the detail until the wine has enough shape to carry the vineyard name.

Coastal Pinot from a steep estate

The site gives the work its pressure. Wentworth Vineyard & Ranch farms a steep, high-elevation coastal vineyard just 3.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean, within the Anderson Valley AVA, with estate vineyards set among coastal redwoods and an ocean-influenced microclimate in Philo and Elk. The farming philosophy is regenerative, and the scale is small. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sit at the center of the cellar’s still-wine work, with Grüner Veltliner, Aligoté, and Blaufränkisch also in the program. The public signature remains vineyard and vintage: Abel Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 and Wentworth Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023. Those names do not ask the drinker to look away from site. They ask for attention to it. A 100-point rated Pinot Noir from the estate has brought notice, but the craft here is not only the score. It is the decision to keep the work close to the vineyard that produced it.

Redwoods, roses, and library pours

The tasting room moves at the pace of the place. Library pours give the wines time in the glass and let older bottles sit beside the current shape of the estate, while the room stays quiet enough for that comparison to register. Around it, the setting is serene rather than staged: a rose garden, vineyard views, and the vertical shade of redwoods. The ranch element in the name suits the feel of the property. It is rustic in texture, intimate in scale, and elegant without turning the cellar into theatre. In this room, the pass is the glass and the vineyard is never far from it.

The bottle keeps the site in view

Wentworth has said of the grapes, “It’s a compliment that they like the grapes as much as they do.” It is a plain measure of where he places credit. The next useful reading of the estate is Abel Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023, followed by Wentworth Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023.
