From grower to owner

The vineyard came before the label for Ken Wilson, winemaker at Wilson Winery in Healdsburg, where Dry Creek Valley fruit remains the reference point. Wilson was born in Ontario, Canada, but his work took shape in Sonoma County, first through grape growing and then through the larger charge of making and selling wine. In 1994, he founded Wilson Winery, setting his name on a house built around the long view that vines require. That duration matters here. It places the cellar, the barn, and the patio inside a career that began with vineyard labor rather than a tasting-room concept. Wilson also owns Wilson Artisan Wineries in Healdsburg, but this address carries the first nameplate: Wilson Winery, in Dry Creek Valley, with the maker still attached to the work.

Old-vine Zinfandel as the center of gravity

The program is small in scale and red in focus, with Zinfandel at the front and Petite Sirah, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot close behind it. The house is known for bold, estate-grown Zinfandels from old vines in the Dry Creek Valley AVA, and for a sustainable approach that keeps the vineyard in the foreground. At the winery, Wilson names 1995 Zin as part of his own signature. He has also pointed to 1994 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon as a defining bottling. Together, those two wines frame the early period when his name became tied to a direct, fruit-forward style in the local field. Wilson’s own point of comparison is telling without needing ornament. “I’ve always admired Jim Rowe and the Pezzi King wines, especially the estate Zinfandels.” He has also said, “Pezzi King changed the way we looked at Zinfandel and turned the local winemaking world upside down with its 1995 Zin.” At Wilson Winery, that admiration reads less like nostalgia than discipline: estate fruit, Dry Creek Valley structure, and Zinfandel treated as a serious bench wine.

The barn, the patio, the valley view

The room here is not a polished salon. Wilson Winery works from a rustic, century-old barn setting, with vineyard views and a patio that keeps the pace low. The house character is laid-back and friendly, the noise level quiet, the scale intimate. That matters for a place whose standout feature is not only the glass but the way the glass sits beside the vineyard: bold Zinfandel, grilled tri-tip, weather off Dry Creek Valley, and the old barn holding the scene together. The tasting style leans outdoors, on the patio, where the view keeps reminding the drinker that the cellar’s argument begins in rows rather than in language. It is a small house in a broad appellation, and its sense of place comes from that proportion.
