Limniona at the center of the job

Limniona sets the first decision. Christos Zafeirakis works as winemaker at Zafeirakis Winery in Tirnavos, Greece, with that indigenous red grape at the center of the estate rather than at its edge. He is also the founder, which matters here because the cellar direction and the public identity of the domaine sit with the same hands. His path runs through the University of Athens, the University of Turin, and the Agricultural University of Milan; the sequence gives the work a studied frame without turning it into an academic exercise. At the estate, Zafeirakis has been named winemaker and founder from 2012 onward, and head winemaker from 2018 onward. That duration is part of the craft. The wines return to the same few markers, Limniona, Malagousia, and Chardonnay, and the range reads less like a search for breadth than a long argument for clarity.

Certified organic work on twelve hectares

The production here is small enough for the vineyard choices to remain legible: 100,000 bottles annually from 12 hectares. Zafeirakis Winery works organically, with dry-farmed vines in PGI Tyrnavos, and the estate’s stated distinction is the revival of Limniona through certified organic viticulture. The soils are clay-limestone, set near the Pinios River and below the foothills of Mount Olympus, a frame that keeps the wines tied to place before cellar technique enters the conversation. The varietal list is concise but not narrow: Limniona, Malagouzia, Assyrtiko, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The signature bottles name the discipline directly. Limniona 2020, Limniona Rose 2023, and Limniona 2019 keep the same grape in different registers, while Microcosmos Malagousia 2022 gives the white program its own line. The work is still wine, red, white, and rose, with the estate’s energy held in varietal expression rather than volume.

The vineyard below Olympus

The room here begins outside. Zafeirakis Winery sits among vineyards in the foothills of Mount Olympus, with the Pinios River close enough to be part of the estate’s stated setting. The tone is quiet, rustic, and intimate, not a stage set for scale. In a family-owned estate context, the tasting room reads as an extension of the vineyard rather than a separate performance, and the serenity of the place suits the kind of wine being made: still, site-led, and patient with its own vocabulary. Clay-limestone soils give the physical register; Limniona gives the cultural one. The cellar does not need to turn the grape into a symbol. Zafeirakis puts it in bottle often enough for repetition to do the work.

Why the revival matters

The point of this estate is not simply that it grows Limniona, but that it gives the variety a sustained address in Tyrnavos. The two current awards attached to the winery sit beside a more practical form of recognition: a founder-winemaker continuing to make the same Greek grape visible across named bottlings. Limniona 2019 and Limniona 2020 remain the clearest measure of that continuity.
