The Path
At Eastern Institute of Technology, Alastair Benham trained before entering the trade as an intern at Stone Hill Winery in Missouri. That kind of start set the terms of the work: close to the cellar, where timing, cleanliness, patience, and repetition carry as much weight as instinct. He later joined Gusbourne as Winery Crew (2018–2023), working across the cellar and estate and building familiarity with the producer from the ground up. Since 2023, Alastair Benham has been Head of Wine Operations at Gusbourne, a position that reflects the technical range and trust accumulated through years of hands-on work.
The Work Today
Since 2023, Benham has led Wine Operations at the Kent producer, overseeing the steps that move a wine from base material to finished bottle. The work is built on consistency: keeping the process steady so what is grown and pressed can be guided, stage by stage, into a house style that holds its shape. Bottling, secondary fermentation, dosage, tasting trials, wine storage, and disgorging each sit in that sequence as separate but connected parts of the job. His own description keeps science and making in the same frame. The craft is not presented as separate from the technical side, but dependent on it: sensory judgment backed by exact process, and cellar work informed by close attention. "I really got into not just the craft but also the science; it’s a lovely mix of both worlds." He also points to consistency as something built through the choice of fruit behind a release. "It gives us a point of consistency – because we used Sussex fruit for our 2021 wine."

Alastair Benham's signature wines include Gusbourne Pinot Noir Blanc 2022 and Fifty One Degrees North 2016. They mark the style and level of control that sit behind his work, each bottle showing the operational precision he helps maintain.
