The Climb
Graphic design gave Anna Maria Abbona a working vocabulary for proportion, balance, and close attention to detail before she entered wine. That background stayed in frame when, in 1989, she moved into the vineyard and took on the work of wine business operator and wine producer at Anna Maria Abbona, a role she holds today. The shift looks less like a break than a change of medium: from composition on paper to farming, fermenting, and building a house style from place.
Today
As a wine producer, she works from a family view of the land that she states plainly: "Our farming roots are the prerequisite and background of everything we do: wine is just one facet of our family’s deep attachment to the land, which has become a true way of life." The emphasis is on land first, wine second. In her hands, the work sits inside a continuum of family practice, soil, season, and technique.
Signature
Anna's signature dishes include Alta Langa Rosé Clara, Alta Langa San Bartomè, Langhe Riesling L'Alman, Maioli, and Barolo DOCG. Together, they show a range that moves from lift to weight, with each label carrying the cadence of a place and the discipline of restraint. The list points to a producer working with the character of each grape variety rather than forcing it into a single register.
In Their Words “Our project: to make wine in a conscientious way, paying strict attention to tradition and nature, once again valuing craftsmanship and the expression of the grape variety in its land of choice.” Taken as a working brief, the line puts method ahead of message. It frames the cellar and vineyard as places for discipline, tradition, and close attention to what the grape and site can carry. “Our farming roots are the prerequisite and background of everything we do: wine is just one facet of our family’s deep attachment to the land, which has become a true way of life.” Read with the first statement, it sets wine inside a larger agricultural practice. The result is a production philosophy anchored in inheritance, land, and repeated work rather than spectacle.
