i. Biography

The work entered his life in 1980, when he came to the property because his uncle Gustave was ill; that first step placed him inside the daily rhythm of the cellar before the title was formally his.

The Path

At Domaine Gros Frère et Sœur, control passed to Bernard Gros in 1984, and that year marks the practical shift from arrival to responsibility. From then on, his work was defined by the demands of a single address in Vosne-Romanée: season after season, the same vines, the same cellar, the same requirement to handle each year on its own terms.

The Work Today

Cellar machinery, in Bernard Gros’s view, is not neutral equipment but a tool that makes a cellar’s habits more visible. As he put it: "we are always learning a little more as to how such machines work, but it was clear from the start that they amplify the best characteristics, but also the worst – so much care is needed." The point is plain enough for trade: machines can sharpen what is already there, for better or worse, and the margin between the two depends on attention. The emphasis stays on care, observation, and the slow learning that comes from repeated harvests.
