i. Biography
“When my father started this winery, his goal was to take the incredible fruit from this historic piece of land and make the best wine we possibly can.” At Chateau Montelena in Calistoga, Napa Valley, that standard is treated as cellar practice rather than slogan; Bo Barrett has held the owner role since 2013.
The Path
Training for the work ran through Fresno State University and then through the Montelena floor: vineyard helper in 1972, cellar hand / assistant in 1973, and later owner and CEO of Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley, California.
The Work Today
Continuity is the operating brief at Chateau Montelena. Since 2013, Bo Barrett’s ownership has sat inside a house known for wines made in a Classic European-style, structured mode, including Cabernets, Chardonnays, Zinfandel and Rieslings. Cellar handling is described without softness. “In fact, I think young, fermenting wine can use a good thrashing at that point.” The point is practical: fermentation is an active stage, and the handling decision belongs to the wine in front of the crew. Staffing is part of the production system, not a separate management layer. Barrett puts the principle plainly: “We hire the very best people we can, communicate our expectations, and give them the freedom to do their jobs well.” That method matches a structured house style: define the expectation, trust the material, and let competent hands do the work.
Signature
Bo's signature wines include 1973 Chardonnay, Chateau Montelena 1973 Chardonnay, 1996 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2013 Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2015 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.
In Their Words “Years ago it was believed that air pumps were gentler, and therefore better for the wine, but I don’t believe that’s true. In fact, I think young, fermenting wine can use a good thrashing at that point.” “When my father started this winery, his goal was to take the incredible fruit from this historic piece of land and make the best wine we possibly can.”
Acclaim
Public recognition for the house is anchored to Chateau Montelena 1973 Chardonnay. At the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, later known as the Judgment of Paris, the wine won first place among white wines while Barrett was an assistant on that vintage. The more useful lesson for the trade is the continuity of the brief credited to Jim Barrett: take fruit from Montelena's historic land and make the best possible wine from it. In Bo Barrett’s work, that brief stays connected to vineyard labor, cellar choice, and wines built beyond fashion.
