Ten vintages held against one estate

At harvest, Hélène Mingot reads fruit and season as one decision in her role as Technical Director and Winemaker at Eisele Vineyard in Calistoga. The station has been hers since 2013, and the work does not split vineyard oversight from cellar response. At this estate, farming and finished wine belong to the same chain: soil, weather, picking, fermentation, élevage, and the later impression in the glass. Hélène Mingot came to that responsibility after formal study at Ecole Superieur d'Agriculture d'Angers and Institut national polytechnique de Toulouse, followed by research, harvest work, consulting, and California winemaking before Eisele. The sequence matters because this is not a house built around a single cellar gesture. It asks the winemaker to keep the vineyard legible when the year presses hard. Mingot has described the span plainly: “It’s been ten years this year!” She has also said, “We already have ten vintages done.” Ten vintages at one bench give a maker a working archive of heat, restraint, ripeness, and return.

Biodynamics across thirty-eight acres

The estate is a 38-acre vineyard in the Calistoga AVA, farmed biodynamically and set on well-drained alluvial and volcanic soils. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the conversation here, with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sauvignon Musqué also named in the vineyard’s range. The place is small in scale, with production around 5,000 cases annually, and its discipline rests on farming choices that precede the cellar. Mingot’s stated aim is purity and complexity, not as cellar polish but as continuity between season and site. “This way, even in a warmer vintage, the wine can stay truthful to the place,” she has said. That sentence carries the technical burden of the role: to hold freshness, texture, and site character when Napa fruit can easily move toward force. The 2019 Sauvignon Blanc is one named bottling from this period, and its recognition belongs to that wine, that vintage, and this estate.

A protected valley, a quiet cellar

The vineyard sits in a protected valley in northeast Napa Valley, between the Palisades Mountains and the Chalk Hill Gap. Forested hillsides rise around the blocks; olive groves and a creek cut through the estate’s sense of enclosure. The room for the work is not only the cellar, though the cellar receives the decisions at harvest. It is the vineyard path, the block, the pass from picking to press, the tasting glass held against prior seasons. The grounds are refined without needing to announce themselves. Quiet suits the place. On an estate whose vineyard is more than 140 years old, the pressure is not novelty but continuity, and the next useful mark is already in the same material: the next vintage of Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Calistoga.
