Steinschriber’s route to the cellar began with study at University of California, Los Angeles and California State University, Fresno, then moved through winemaking work in California and Israel before Napa became the repeated station. Nearly three decades in one cellar is its own measure of craft, the kind of tenure where judgment is not reset with each vintage. His own line was plain, “Every year we try to make better and better wine.” It suits the place. Improvement here is not a change of costume; it is the small correction in picking, extraction, élevage, and blend that keeps Cabernet legible from year to year.

Four vineyards, one mountain discipline

The program turns on four microclimate vineyards on Diamond Mountain, each treated as its own source of Cabernet character. The estate also works with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, but the center of gravity remains still red wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, shaped by exposure, soil, and the cooler, higher mood of the appellation. Holding four sites apart is harder work than blending them early. Each parcel ripens on its own clock, so picking dates, ferment vessels, and barrel decisions multiply, and a small misjudgment in one lot cannot be hidden inside the others. That founding premise still governs the cellar: vineyard difference is not decoration, it is the material. A mountain Cabernet can take structure easily; the harder craft is keeping site, tannin, and fruit in proportion so that one vineyard does not blur into another.

The estate sits in a secluded mountaintop setting, quiet enough that the vineyard reads before the room does. Warm sunny days sit against the elevation of Diamond Mountain, and the tasting room looks outward to vines and valley rather than inward to performance. Hosted tastings here often move vertically, which is the right grammar for the place: the glass sets one season beside another, and the hand of the cellar becomes visible through repetition.
