The Climb
Founding winemaking at Bonterra Vineyards in 1993 put Bob Blue into a role built on continuity, not noise. The work called for the kind of judgment that accumulates over years: attention in the cellar, restraint in blending, and enough confidence to let the wine hold its own. In 2022, Blue moved into the role of director of winemaking at Fetzer Vineyards, carrying forward a career defined by measured decisions and a steady hand. Title changes, but the underlying method stays put: detail over display, structure over excess, and a willingness to let complexity come from time rather than force. Blue’s reputation has been made in those patient spaces where craft is proven by balance, not volume.
Today
The work now sits in the same deliberate register, with Blue favoring wines that read as composed rather than contrived. His approach is exacting and unshowy, with a clear preference for clarity over fuss. That kind of discipline leaves room for the wine to carry itself, without needing to announce the making.
Signature
1000 Stories Zinfandel and Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon map Blue’s range without changing the core of it. They point to wines with presence, but also enough restraint to keep their shape intact. The throughline is texture, balance, and layered expression that arrives gradually in the glass. Under Blue, familiar names are handled with a preference for authenticity over embellishment.
In Their Words “The wine has to be great before it even sees Bourbon barrels; the magic that happens after that should enhance the wine further.” “We were—and continue to be—extremely conscious of crafting wines that are not a gimmick.” Those lines lay out the method plainly: first the wine, then the finish; first the base, then any added dimension. The aim is not to cover character, but to extend it. Anything introduced later has to read as part of the wine’s own structure.
