Chris Mullineux

The Climb

Training at Stellenbosch University and University of California, Davis gave Chris Mullineux a base in structure and precision. The value of that education shows in the way the work reads later: not as ornament, but as a measured effort to let vineyard character remain visible. The practical ground was built at Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards, where he worked as winemaker until 2007. That period ended with the co-founding of Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines in 2007, the venture that remains central to his work. The progression is exact rather than theatrical: a move, a partnership, and then a body of work organized around consistency and direction.

Today

At Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines in Franschhoek, Chris Mullineux serves as co-founder and winemaker. The craft position is clear: low-intervention winemaking, site-expressive wines from old vines, and farming carried out as naturally and sustainably as possible. The aim is not concealment but legibility, so the vineyard source carries through and the old-vine material adds depth and texture without being overworked. That restraint is the point. Instead of layering on effect, the work trusts the soils, seasons, and older vines to supply shape and nuance. The wines stay anchored in place, with the place kept readable in the glass.

Signature

Chris's signature wines include Mullineux Swartland Straw Wine 2017, Mullineux Swartland Schist Syrah 2016, Mullineux Old Vines White, Kloof Street, and Single Terroir. Taken together, they show range without drifting from the same set of priorities: source, clarity, and a tight relationship between site and finished wine.

Recognition

The recognition here comes through professional continuity and a plainly stated style. Mullineux moved from Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards to an independent venture in the Swartland, then built the work around low-intervention cellar practice and old-vine site expression. No borrowed grandeur is needed for that record.
