i. Biography
The Estate
The estate carries both names because the work began as a shared undertaking: one anchored in place, and in the idea that the vineyard should speak with as little distortion as possible. The first responsibility sits in the vineyard. That is the opening discipline in the chain, before fermentation, wood, sulfites, or ageing enter the work.
In the Cellar
The style here is built around vineyard expression. In Claudio Conterno’s case, that means a fixed sequence of choices: hand selection, harvest by hand in small crates, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, careful use of wood, minimal sulfites, and bottle ageing. Each step keeps pressure on the original material. Small-crate harvesting protects what has already been chosen in the vineyard, while indigenous yeasts keep fermentation tied to the estate’s own microbial life. Claudio Conterno describes the method as a practical order of work rather than a program for show: “This seemingly complex path is the most natural for us.” The line fits the pace of the cellar, where each decision matters and none is treated as decoration.
The Bottlings
Barolo is the specialty associated with Claudio Conterno’s work, with each bottling aimed at expressing its own terroir faithfully. The organizing principle is not a generic Barolo style, but the effort to let each site keep its own character. That aim carries through the cellar. If the vineyard is the source, then selection, fermentation, wood, sulfites, and bottle ageing are the means of carrying that source forward without flattening it. The signature lies in restraint applied across the whole process.
Signature
Claudio's signature wines include Bricco Bastia, Ginestrino, Vignota, and Castelleto Vigna Pressenda.
In Their Words “Our wine is the offspring of the land in which the wines are cultivated, and once in the winery must be brought up, step by step, as if it were a member of the family.”
