i. Biography
David Guimaraens has been Technical Director and Head Winemaker at The Fladgate Partnership since 1991, working inside a house that treats winemaking and blending as one continuous technical discipline rather than separate tasks. Over more than three decades, his work has been about patience, precision, and maintaining the structure that defines Port.
The Path
That early time in Portugal set the terms of the job: close attention to the Douro, and a cellar practice built around repetition, measurement, and control. Since 1991, Guimaraens has been Technical Director and Head Winemaker at The Fladgate Partnership, overseeing winemaking and blending for Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca Guimaraens, Croft, and Delaforce, while also taking on the role of Head Winemaker of Fonseca Guimaraens in 1994.
The Work Today
At The Fladgate Partnership, the vineyard side of the work is described in terms of recovery, selection, and block management. “I have recovered many of our local grape varieties, to the point where we actively plant 12 different grape varieties today (in controlled blocks rather than mixed plantings).” The point is clarity: preserve what belongs, organize it with intent, and shape the final blend with a clearer architectural base. The cellar follows the same logic. “I also only do co-fermentation, in the belief that it is at this point that they complement each other, rather than later in the tasting room.” That approach puts the decision where the material is still changing, not after the fact. In Guimaraens’s hands, balance is something established early, through timing and method, not adjusted later as a finishing move.
Signature
David's signature wines include Fonseca 1985, VVOP White, Croft Rosé Port, and Croft Vintage 2017. Taken together, they show the range of his technical remit: age, freshness, color, and depth held in working balance, each one connected to a different part of the same discipline.
In Their Words “I have recovered many of our local grape varieties, to the point where we actively plant 12 different grape varieties today (in controlled blocks rather than mixed plantings).” “I also only do co-fermentation, in the belief that it is at this point that they complement each other, rather than later in the tasting room.”
Acclaim
The cellar stance is conservative where tradition still does the job: “In the winery, I am very conservative with regard to our traditional foot treading in granite lagares.” For Guimaraens, that is less a slogan than a working principle—keep the methods that continue to deliver texture, rhythm, and control.
