i. Biography
Dick Erath founded Erath Winery in Dundee, United States, in 1968, and in doing so helped establish a foothold for Oregon wine inside the state’s wider history. The work began in a place where climate, land, and assumptions about fine wine were still being tested against one another. That is the shape of the early argument: a winery set down with attention to what the country would support, and to what it would not.
The Essentials His read on Oregon was direct: "Oregon has limited heat and light but plenty of water." It is the kind of assessment that comes from watching a region over time rather than from trying to force a model onto it. The line names the conditions plainly—less heat, less light, more water—and points to a way of working that asks for restraint, patience, and close attention to season and site. That comparison sharpened when he turned to the other side of the map: "Down here water is limited." The contrast is clean and unsentimental. One region gives in one way, another withholds in another. For a winemaker, that difference is not abstract; it changes the terms of the work. Erath’s language keeps the focus where it belongs, on the facts of place and the adjustments those facts demand.
In Their Words “Oregon has limited heat and light but plenty of water. Down here water is limited.” “Everything I learned about winemaking in Oregon is 180 degrees different here.” That last line is useful because it rejects the idea that winemaking knowledge travels intact from one region to another. “Everything I learned” points to accumulated practice; “180 degrees different here” makes clear that the same methods cannot simply be carried over unchanged. The sentence lands like a working note from someone who has had to re-read the conditions and reset the approach. It frames winemaking as a craft of comparison, adaptation, and attention to what the land is actually offering.
