Since 2007, Dirk Coetzee has served as head winemaker of L’Avenir Estate and as winemaker of L’Avenir Wine Estate, keeping the cellar aligned with the pace of the vintages and the demands of the fruit. The length of that tenure points to something practical: a working familiarity with the material, and the consistency that comes from staying with a house long enough to know its wines at every stage.

Where They Are Now

Pinotage and Chenin Blanc define his specialty, with particular emphasis on Modern Pinotage. Coetzee frames Pinotage in structural terms: "The beauty of Pinotage lies in its thick skin, which protects the rich flavours within." The observation reads as a technical note, but it also shows how closely the grape’s outer resilience and inner concentration are being read in the cellar. Chenin Blanc carries a parallel place in the work, treated with the same attention to detail. He adds, "We call her the old lady and she is even impressive on Zoom!" The language keeps the wine close to the hand: aged, specific, and still capable of holding attention on its own terms.

Dirk's signature wines include Grand Pinotage, Provenance Range: Chenin Blanc, Provenance Range: Pinotage, Stellenbosch Classic (Cape Blend), and Glenrosé. Together, they sketch a portfolio shaped by clarity of intent and a clear devotion to the grapes that define his cellar work.
