The working line in Burgundy runs through brokerage, cellars, and inherited domaines: work for Becky Wasserman, the pioneering American wine broker, precedes the responsibility carried inside a family name built over generations.
The Route
Estate management in Meursault has, since 1987, included vineyard and cellar responsibility at Domaine des Comtes Lafon, where Dominique Lafon has been the manager responsible for vineyards and winemaking. The same estate-trained discipline moved into the Mâconnais in 1999, when he became owner/winemaker of Les Héritiers des Comtes Lafon.
The Work Today
Meursault remains the operating center of the work: the family estate is directed by Dominique Lafon as Managing Director, with Clos de la Barre, a monopole vineyard in Meursault located at Domaine des Comtes Lafon, giving the domaine a defined parcel and inheritance. Cellar choices are stated with unusual clarity for the estate hierarchy: Montrachet is the only wine from the estate aged entirely in new oak; the premiers crus are aged with 25% to 40% new oak for 16 months. In the Mâconnais, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon, the winery he founded, produces Mâcon wines described as among the best wines from the region and as offering value compared with Meursault bottlings. Independent ownership in Burgundy sits apart from the family domaine, and the distinction matters to how a house is built and governed. As Dominique Lafon put it, "At Comtes Lafon, I was just a shareholder. I felt the need to have my own company, something I could own 100%."
