The Climb

Stanford University is the formal marker in Stewart’s background, but the more telling training came through founding and running businesses. Doug Stewart first built Howler Organic Rainforest Sorbets and Gelatos, where he was founder from 1994–2004, then moved into wine as founder at Breggo in Anderson Valley from 2005–2009. The sequence shows a builder’s logic: learn the mechanics, make the product, carry that discipline into the next room. Today, as winemaker of Lichen Estate, that same approach reads across the arc from Stanford to sorbet and gelato to cellar leadership.

Today

Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir define the cellar focus at Lichen Estate, with both sparkling and still wines in the mix. For Stewart, that narrow frame gives the work shape. Doug Stewart’s role is to keep the decisions specific enough that precision can hold, while still leaving room for the final wine to carry character through to bottle.

Signature

Grand Cuvée Rosé, Solera Pinot Noir, Volume 10, and Les Pinots are the wines most closely tied to Doug Stewart’s name. Together, they show a portfolio that moves across styles without losing contact with the grapes and the estate sensibility behind them.
