Duncan Kennedy

Duncan Kennedy trained at University of Adelaide, laying the groundwork for a career defined by precision, place, and the quiet discipline that sits behind every serious bottle. That education helped establish the technical backbone of his approach, but the enduring thread of his work is a close, practical relationship with the vineyard and the cellar. Today, Duncan is Chief Winemaker and viticulturist of Kay Brothers.

Kennedy works as Chief Winemaker and Viticulturist at Kay Brothers in McLaren Vale, Australia. At Kay Brothers, tradition is not treated as ornament but as method. The original fermenters remain part of the process, the basket press brings its own pressure and texture to the work, and Shiraz is matured in large-format oak of 5400 litres as well as some barrels. These are the practical touchpoints that shape the wines’ passage from fruit to finished form, each one adding structure, restraint, and a sense of continuity with the estate’s long history.

Grenache is part of the same present-tense focus. Kennedy puts the shift plainly: "There's a lot more effort going into single varietal Grenache now. In that one line, the work opens toward a broader attention to variety and expression, while still remaining rooted in place. The regional comparison is just as direct: "We're a bit cooler than the Barossa. And when he describes the wine’s character, he reaches for balance rather than excess: "Intense but elegant, with intricate, fine-grained tannins."

Taken together, those choices sketch a winemaking philosophy built on the tangible and the patient: old-vine Shiraz, Single-varietal Grenache, traditional fermentation vessels, basket pressing and large oak. It is a craft biography shaped by one McLaren Vale winery and by the wines that continue to speak in its name.
