The Climb
At Castello Banfi in Tuscany, Ezio Rivella held the dual responsibility of manager and winemaker, a position that put estate decisions and cellar decisions in the same set of hands. In a region watched closely for how tradition is maintained and argued over, that role established his standing through method rather than display. The reputation that followed was built on working knowledge of both vineyard and cellar, and on the ability to hold a line over time. From that estate base, Rivella moved into roles that carried the authority of the trade into national and international institutions. As president of the National Committee for doc wines at Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies of Italy (1993–1998), he worked in the space where standards, identity, and naming are set and defended. The post placed him among the people responsible for how Italian wine is defined on paper and in practice.
