Coming Up

International finance at World Bank gave Franco Batzella a first training in scale, structure, and discipline before the work shifted to wine. That path later gave way to Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy, where Batzella was founded in 2000 and Batzella was led as founder and winemaker from 2000–2021. The change in trade was a move from abstract systems to seasonal labor, with the vineyard demanding patience, repetition, and attention to the material conditions of each year.

Where They Are Now

Founder and winemaker remained the central role, and the focus stayed on Bolgheri wines, especially Cabernet-based wines. In Franco Batzella’s work, structure and expression are treated as coequal parts of the equation, with ripeness, freshness, power, and clarity kept in balance. The wines are tied to the region through that balance, and to the sense of place that comes from working with rooted material rather than a generic template.

The named wines — Tâm Bolgheri Superiore DOC, Peàn Bolgheri Rosso DOC, Vox Loci Cabernet Franc, and Mezzodì Bolgheri Bianco DOC — show the range of Franco Batzella’s approach. Taken together, they mark a style built around place, with Bolgheri Superiore carrying more weight and the white DOC opening a lighter register.
