Calibration inside the blue clay

Tannin quality is the first decision Marco Balsimelli, winemaker at Masseto in Castagneto Carducci, keeps in view. His own words place elegance between richness, freshness, length, and the feel of tannin, which is a practical brief in a cellar built for a single red wine from Merlot. He arrived at Ornellaia and Masseto in January 2024 as Production Director, after study at the University of Florence in 2002 and consultant work in Bordeaux from 2010. That path matters here because Masseto asks for reading detail without forcing the line. The wine has to carry generosity, salinity, freshness, and length without letting one part take the pass from the others. Axel Heinz had overseen Ornellaia and Masseto before leaving in 2023, after 18 years, for Château Lascombes in Margaux. Balsimelli now holds the station at a house whose identity depends less on change than on calibration.

Merlot worked from a single parcel

The method begins with a narrow proposition: Masseto is a 100% Merlot wine from a 17-acre vineyard within the Ornellaia estate, rooted in blue clay in Bolgheri. The house works at small scale and states a sustainable philosophy, but the stronger craft fact is the constraint. One variety, one hillside, one dominant soil, and a cellar arranged to let gravity do part of the work. The underground winery is a quarry, carved into the hill, with gravity-flow vinification shaping the movement of fruit and wine through the building. For Balsimelli, Massetino sits beside Masseto as part of the signature work, with generosity checked by control and texture kept in view. The discipline is not to make power louder. It is to draw depth into shape, so structure supports the finish rather than crowding it.

A quarry under the vineyard

The cellar sits under the Tuscan hillside with the vineyard around it, the exterior kept discreet and pure while the interior gathers weight. Concrete appears in monolithic masses; light and shadow do part of the room’s work, making the place feel closer to excavated earth than to display. That matters for a wine whose story is already bound to clay. The architecture does not need to explain the vineyard. It presses the cellar back into it. Inside, the quiet suits the program: Merlot moving through a gravity-fed house, the bench-side decisions made in a room that feels dense, cool, and held by the hill. The texture of Masseto is not separated from that setting. It is made beneath the same 17-acre slope that gives the wine its blue clay name.

The line Balsimelli has to hold

Masseto’s harder task is continuity. Balsimelli’s present work is to keep richness in conversation with freshness, salinity, length, and tannin quality, the proportions he names when he speaks about elegance. The next measure is in the glass, where Masseto and Massetino must keep their amplitude under control from the blue clay vineyard.
