Where They Are Now

Training at University of Florence (2002) gave Balsimelli a formal base before his work moved into the disciplined demands of fine wine. From 2010, he worked as consultant winemaker at many of the region’s leading estates in Bordeaux, a period that sharpened technical judgment and the ability to read wines as assemblies of detail, built over time with patience and intent. In 2024, he stepped into his current role as Production Director of Ornellaia and Masseto (since January 2024), placing him at the center of two of the region’s most closely watched names. The task at that level is not only to make wine, but to hold identity steady while pursuing tighter calibration — the quiet structure behind bottles that need to speak clearly, elegantly, and with length.

Signature

Masseto and Massetino are the signature wines associated with Marco’s work. They show an approach built around generosity checked by control, with texture kept in view and balance treated as a working principle. The style is not about excess; it is about drawing depth into shape so structure supports the wine without crowding the finish.

In Their Words “For me, elegance lies precisely in the balance between richness on one side and freshness, length, and above all, tannin quality on the other.” The line is direct, and so is the method behind it. For Balsimelli, elegance is not an idea separated from production; it is an outcome made through choices that keep richness in conversation with freshness and length. Tannin quality sits at the center of that balance, giving shape without roughness and leaving the palate with a cleaner finish. “Its DNA has always been about generosity, but at the same time, freshness, salinity, and length.” That tension between breadth and definition runs through his view of the wines. Generosity is never left alone; it is held against freshness, salinity, and length so the result stays lifted and focused. In Balsimelli’s framing, the aim is not volume for its own sake, but proportion — amplitude kept under control, and texture carrying structure rather than burying it.
