The Path

Viticultural school gave François Chidaine the formal grounding, but the family winery at Family estate in Montlouis-sur-Loire, France (1984–1989) gave the work its daily shape. Those five years placed him close to the practical side of the trade: repetition, observation, and the inherited knowledge that passes from one season to the next. In that setting, technique was only part of the lesson; attention, restraint, and respect for the land were part of the job. When he founded Domaine François Chidaine in 1989, François Chidaine carried that background into an independent estate rather than away from one. The domaine grew from the same Loire setting that formed his early work, and his role as founder and winemaker has kept the line between family tradition and individual practice intact.

Since 1989, François Chidaine has served as founder and winemaker at the estate he created, working from the same Loire base that first shaped his understanding of the craft. The vineyard remains the starting point, and his own position on the work is direct: “The wine world has changed a lot, especially in its approach to viticulture. Nowadays people are very conscious of the fact that wine is made in the vineyard with the production of good grapes.” That view places the emphasis where many growers would: on the quality of the raw material and the discipline required to produce it. For François Chidaine, the domaine’s identity follows from that principle, with the vineyard carrying the weight of the final wine.
