i. Biography
Since 2003, Fritz Miesbauer has worked the same brief from two sides: cellar and vineyard at Weingut Stadt Krems an der Donau. As Managing Director and winemaker, he also carries responsibility for the estate’s 40 hectares of vineyards, with their slopes and soils setting the pace of the work. The emphasis stays on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, varieties he has steered toward wines that read clearly in grape, site, and soil. The result is an estate style built on precision rather than ornament.
The Climb
Winemaking at Weingut Stadt Krems has been Fritz Miesbauer’s post since 2003, and the length of that tenure shows in the continuity of the wines. The role asks for both management and interpretation: keeping the estate running while shaping the vineyards’ character into bottles that stay close to origin. Over time, Miesbauer’s name has become linked with the estate’s Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, wines aimed at definition rather than excess.
Today
As Managing Director and winemaker, he keeps the focus on those two grapes. The work depends on the particulars that matter in a serious winegrowing estate: reading vineyard differences, shaping texture and line, and insisting that each wine carry the mark of place. At Weingut Stadt Krems an der Donau, that means wines that remain legible as products of their origin, with varietal character set against vineyard and soil.
Signature
Fritz's signature dishes include Ried Steinpoint, Grüner Veltliner 2022, Grüner Veltliner Hochterrassen, and 2018 Riesling Kremstal DAC Ried Steiner Schreck 1 ÖTW. Taken together, they map the range of his style: rooted in named sites, attentive to vintage, and centered on the two grapes that define much of his work. Each bottle points to a different angle on the same approach, with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling carrying the estate’s main voice.
Recognition
His wines are presented as model examples of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, built to show varietal character, site, and soil. That recognition reflects the discipline of the estate’s approach under Miesbauer: wines that do not hide their origins, but present them clearly. His reputation rests on steady refinement rather than reinvention, vintage after vintage at Weingut Stadt Krems an der Donau.
