At Weingut Scheidgen in Hammerstein, the decisive move came in 1979, when Georg Scheidgen began converting the family business entirely to viticulture. That shift placed the vineyard at the center of the estate, making the land, the slopes, and the seasonal cycle the basis of the work rather than its backdrop. By 1991, Georg Scheidgen had taken the lead in the seventh generation of Weingut Scheidgen, holding the family line in place while keeping the operation close to the vineyard. What follows from that path is continuity with intent. The estate has stayed anchored in hands-on work, and Georg Scheidgen’s role has been to maintain that inheritance with precision. In a family winery, continuity is often claimed; here, it is the result of repeated work in vineyard and cellar, year after year.

Today

Since 1991, Georg Scheidgen has led the winery in the seventh generation, with Riesling and Pinot wines still defining the brief. The estate’s character comes from a practical, attentive approach suited to a house built on family continuity and vineyard labor rather than display. The measure of the work is balance: pace, site awareness, and wines that carry place without excess weight. Among the wines associated with Georg Scheidgen, the Gartenlay Auslese is the benchmark.
